Australia’s Famous Kangaroo and Map Stamps

Australian stamp history begins on 2 January 1913, with the issue of a red 1d (one penny) Kangaroo and Map issued by the newly federated Commonwealth of Australia. The design was based on an entry that won the Stamp Design Competition by Blamire Young, a local watercolour artist, was commissioned to produce the final design. The first definitive issue had fifteen stamps (all Perf. 12) of various stamp denominations ranging in value from ½d (halfpenny) to £2 (two pounds). The design was used until 1945 utalising different watermarks (4) and paper types.
